How to Build Muscle and Stay
Mobile

Let’s clear this up straight away.
Yes – strength training increases stiffness.
And no – that is not automatically a problem.
When you lift heavy, your muscles adapt, your tendons adapt, and force transmission improves. Connective tissue becomes more efficient at transmitting and tolerating load. For bodybuilders and powerlifters, that stiffness is useful because when force transmission matters most, less energy is lost and more power moves through the system.
But most of us are not training for a one-rep max.
We are training to feel:
Capable at 60
Confident at 70
Independent at 80
Confident at 70
Independent at 80
And that shifts the conversation entirely.
Some stiffness is normal. Some stiffness is useful.
The problem is when strength is built so narrowly that movement starts disappearing.
That is where intelligent programming matters.
Because you can absolutely build muscle and stay mobile – if you train through full range under load.
Does Strength Training Make You Stiff?
It can.
Progressive resistance training increases tendon stiffness. That is well supported in the research. A stiffer tendon transmits force more effectively from muscle to bone, which is beneficial for performance.
But stiffness is not inherently problematic.
Narrow adaptation is.
Your body adapts to what you repeatedly expose it to.
If you only train mid-range.
If you never load longer muscle lengths.
If you rush the eccentric phase.
If you avoid rotation.
Your tissues become efficient at exactly what you practise – and less prepared for what you do not.
That is not strength training’s fault, that is incomplete programming.
What “Strength Without Stiffness” Actually Means
It does not mean avoiding stiffness altogether.
It means building muscle in a way that maintains usable range.
Muscle fibres are built from repeating contractile units called sarcomeres. When you train at longer joint angles, particularly under controlled eccentric loading, muscles can adapt to become stronger at those longer lengths.
That is how strength and mobility coexist. Passive stretching primarily increases stretch tolerance – your nervous system’s willingness to allow that range.
Strength training through longer ranges increases tolerance, strength and capacity. And capacity is what protects you.

The Split That Changed Everything
When I was 12, I tore my hamstring during a modern dance solo to Hero by Mariah Carey.
The left leg split was the highlight of the routine – and it was right at the very beginning. I wasn’t naturally flexible. I worked for that range, and I wasn’t confident with my new ability – it felt forced.
Sliding into a split isn’t passive. It places tensile stress through:
The hamstring muscle–tendon unit (front leg)
The hip flexors (back leg)
The anterior hip structures
The adductors (inner thighs)
The left leg split was the highlight of the routine – and it was right at the very beginning. I wasn’t naturally flexible. I worked for that range, and I wasn’t confident with my new ability – it felt forced.
Sliding into a split isn’t passive. It places tensile stress through:
The hamstring muscle–tendon unit (front leg)
The hip flexors (back leg)
The anterior hip structures
The adductors (inner thighs)
Stretching is still load.
Over time, my tissues adapted to repeated exposure.
As I got older and stronger, flexibility became easier. Now I can throw a can-can kick without warming up (although do not try this at home). It might feel tight for a second – but structurally, I can tolerate it. That comes with more than 20 years of professional dancing experience and consistent resistance training through full range.
But that night when I was 12? It was freezing. It was the end of a long competition day. I was fatigued.
Backstage, I kept stretching.
I thought, the more I stretch, the warmer I’ll get. Instead of progressively building heat through squats, hinges and controlled loading, I kept chasing end range.
Then, while on stage for my modern solo, I slid into the split and folded forward into a port de bras – bang. The whole auditorium heard it. It wasn’t that my flexibility let me down. It was that demand exceeded capacity. That distinction changed how I train forever.
I remember sliding myself off stage with my arms while dragging my legs behind me. Brutal.
Over time, my tissues adapted to repeated exposure.
As I got older and stronger, flexibility became easier. Now I can throw a can-can kick without warming up (although do not try this at home). Static vs Dynamic Stretching – What Actually Works?
Both static and dynamic stretching improve flexibility over time.
However, when the goal is specifically to increase passive range of motion, consistent static stretching tends to produce slightly greater improvements.
That does not make dynamic stretching useless.
Dynamic work is excellent before training. It prepares your nervous system, increases temperature, and integrates range into movement. Static stretching, on the other hand, appears to gently expand your available range when done consistently. According to current American College of Sports Medicine flexibility guidelines, measurable improvements can be achieved with relatively small, consistent doses of stretching – around 60 seconds total per muscle group, performed two to three times per week.
So no – you do not need to stretch for an hour.
That does not make dynamic stretching useless.
Dynamic work is excellent before training. It prepares your nervous system, increases temperature, and integrates range into movement. Static stretching, on the other hand, appears to gently expand your available range when done consistently. According to current American College of Sports Medicine flexibility guidelines, measurable improvements can be achieved with relatively small, consistent doses of stretching – around 60 seconds total per muscle group, performed two to three times per week.
So no – you do not need to stretch for an hour.
You need consistency.
What is often overlooked, though, is that flexibility does not only improve through stretching.
Resistance training performed through full range of motion can also improve flexibility, particularly when joints are repeatedly taken through larger angles under control.
A deep squat is a simple example. Your hips, knees and ankles all move through significant range while the surrounding muscles are producing force. The same applies to slow lunges, full-range deadlifts, controlled step-downs, and reformer exercises performed properly.
You are not just accessing range. You are building strength inside it.
That is why full-range strength training works so well – it improves flexibility while also increasing force tolerance and tissue capacity.
So ideally, you do both. Stretch to maintain and improve passive range. Strength training through full range so that range becomes usable.
Remember, start slowly and build gradually.

As the carriage moves back, the front leg hamstring is taken toward its end range under controlled load. The back leg hip flexors are also taken toward their end range. Your adductors are active. Your glutes are stabilising. Your core is controlling rotation. Nothing is passive. You are not collapsing into the position. You are controlling it.
The muscle-tendon units are taken toward their current end range under controlled tension while still producing force. That is strength at range. And because the springs are adjustable, you can progressively challenge end range without jumping straight into extreme exposure.
That is an intelligent progression.

Now, when we talk about static stretching under load, we are adding another layer. It means you are holding a stretch position, but the muscles around the joint are still active and supporting you.
So instead of collapsing into a split and hanging on your ligaments, you:
Keep tension through the legs
Control your pelvis
Stay engaged
The position is held – but it is supported. That is where static stretching becomes more useful for long-term capacity, because you are not just increasing tolerance to the stretch, you are increasing control within it. And that is the difference between being flexible and being strong at the end range.
For example:

You do not need extreme mobility, you need tissue capacity that matches your life. Strength without stiffness is not about being soft. It is about being adaptable. And adaptable bodies last.
